One thing is clear – on its Download Center, in the move from Virtual Earth 3D Beta to Bing Maps 3D, Microsoft has managed to lose the Beta label. Microsoft failed to indicate whether the new Bing Maps 3D was nothing more than a simple rebranding of Virtual Earth, or if the release offered on June 2nd was the final version. At that time Microsoft offered for download the Beta build of Virtual Earth 3D 4.0. The last fully fledged release of Virtual Earth 3D happened back in April 2009.

While new features are available with the latest release of Virtual Earth 3D, Microsoft has emphasized that the upgrade is, in fact, focused on delivering a consistent performance boost ahead of anything else.

In this regard, the software giant also delivered the April 2009 release of the Virtual Earth API (application-programming interface), which brings to the table an evolved AJAX control. The latest iteration of the Virtual Earth 3D Control went live on the Microsoft Download Center on April 9, 2009, concomitantly with additional changes introduced by the company to its mapping, location and search platform. Virtual Earth 3D 4.0 is available for download from Microsoft.
